So will new movies ever be... good good again?

Movies Tuesday, 30 July, 2019

So I'm the most embarassingly nerdy person I know, so of course I was skimming through the top grossing films of all time. Noticed that these were the top ten grossing films of the 1970s:

  1.  Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977)
  2.  Jaws (1975)
  3. Grease (1978)
  4. The Sting (1973)
  5. Superman (1978)
  6.  The Godfather (1972)
  7. The Exorcist (1973)
  8. Smokey and the Bandit (1977)
  9. (National Lampoon's) Animal House (1978)
  10. Blazing Saddles (1974)

Obviously Star Wars is a juggernaut now, but it was a totally new property back then. The only movie built on the shoulders of a really clear franchise is Superman. Godfather and Exorcist may have been based on books, but they weren't created as fanfare or even particularly marketed to fans of those books. Now take a look at the top grossing films of the 2010s:

  1. Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)
  2. Avengers: Endgame (2019)
  3. Black Panther (2018)
  4. Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
  5. Jurassic World (2015)
  6. Marvel's The Avengers (2012)
  7. Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
  8. Incredibles 2 (2018)
  9. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)
  10. Beauty and the Beast (2017)

Every single movie is either a sequel or remake. And, not that The Force Awakens wasn't great, but none of these are in the league of the movies from the 1970s list. Wondering if we'll get back to a place where we value quality over reruns again and prestige films get big budgets again. Or is this the way of the future? Idk
